The city is the seat of Duval County. In 2005 the city had 782,623 inhabitants and a metropolitan area with more than 1.3 million inhabitants. Jacksonville is located in the northeast part of Florida, and is situated on the banks of the St. Johns. The settlement that later became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 under the name Cowford (because of the location at a narrow passage in the river where cattle were driven over). The city got its present name in 1822 after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and later the seventh U.S. president.

Since 1968, the city shared management with the county, making it the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States, and the eleventh largest in the world. The city has a total area of 2,264.5 km ². Of this, 1,962.4 km ² land and 302.1 km ² is water (13.34%).
