Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Chamonix or, a town situated at the foot of Mont Blanc in the Haute-Savoie in the Rhone-Alpes region, south-east of France. Chamonix is located approx. 1030 m. Chamonix valley runs north-east to south-west and through the valley flows the river Arve. On the south-eastern side of Chamonix is Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe with its 4807 m. While in the north-western side of the city is Le Brevent peak (2525 m.). A number of other villages also belongs under the municipality, among which are: Les Bossons (1012 m.), Les Praz (1060 m.), Argentiere (1252 m.) And Le Tour (1462 m.). Chamonix bordering the Aosta Valley in Italy through the Mont Blanc tunnel and Martigny in Switzerland through the Col de Montets Pass (1461 m.).
Chamonix is a popular winter sports resort and considered as "extreme sport" capital of Europe. The first Winter Olympic Games were held here in 1924. South of Chamonix is more fjeltopper, including the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m.) And Mont Blanc (4807 m.). To get up to Mont Blanc, one must utilize a cable car halfway up. After that you can climb up the glaciers. It is also possible to take the gondola to the top of the Aiguille du Midi. From there you can see across to Mont Blanc. Chamonix is more than the "Capital of Extreme". It is both a summer and winter place. A busy day in the summer it can be more visitors than a busy day in the winter. In summer attracts hikers Chamonix, mainly from France, but also many from around the world. Climbing and mountaineering are both very popular, with a wide range of challenges, from easy beginner to advanced, Extreme. Winter in snowboarding and skiing offers the same range of difficulty, from easy beginner slopes to Extreme Off Piste. Chamonix is very accessible, Geneva Airport is only 1:15 hr away and Geneva is beautifully situated in the center of Western Europe.
